This past Tuesday, we celebrated Mardi Gras and International Day as one sacred community with family and friends. One of the greatest blessings of our school is the significant diversity of the ethnic backgrounds of our student population. We embrace the beauty of our differences, knowing that we are all sisters and all belong to the same Lord.
At Benedictine Academy, we are family! The day began with Sister Philomena Fleck, our keynote speaker and Benedictine Sister of the St. Walburga Monastery. She shared her recent trip to Africa - the joys, the sorrows, and the hope that she had for our sisters and brothers in Africa. The timing was perfect because we had recently reached our goal of raising $8,500 to build a one room school building in the Sierra Leone, through our
O Ambassador Club, a joint venture with Free the Children and Oprah's Angel Network. Workshops followed throughout the day with speakers for countries such as Italy, France, the Philippines, Ecuador, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Portugal, and Puerto Rico, to name a few. The highlight was a striking flag parade representing dozens of countries across the globe. The day concluded with a jelly bean raffle and all the proceeds being donated toward a clean water facility in the Sierra Leone. At BA, we are becoming leaders in changing the world to become a better place for everyone.
